A Firefighter’s badge is more than a symbol of commitment to an important profession. It represents “a commitment to our community that help will always arrive when needed.”
Essex Fire Chief Jason Pillon shared those words, while officially welcoming 12 new Firefighters to Essex Fire & Rescue’s roster during a Badge Presentation that took place at Station 2 on Saturday. The event welcomed the new dozen Firefighters, and recognized the time and effort they have put into rigorous training over the past several months.
That badge also represents the commitment Firefighters make to themselves in upholding “the values and traditions that have defined this noble calling for decades,” Pillon added. “The badges we pin today on these courageous individuals carry the weight of generations past, those who ran toward danger when others turned away.”
When Essex Fire & Rescue put the word out it was looking to fill 12 firefighting positions towards the end of last year, around 100 individuals applied. 54 of the candidates participated in the fire recruitment physical testing back in March, which led to the selection of the final dozen.
Over the last several months, the new Firefighters have completed all the required exams and practical training for Firefighter I and II.
Though Essex Fire’s newest Firefighters have proven themselves through that training, their true test is still to come, Pillon warned.
“There will be moments that push you physically, mentally, and emotionally. But remember, you are never alone in facing these challenges. Look to the Firefighters by your side. These are your brothers and sisters now. They will lift you when you are weary, celebrate your victories, and remind you why you chose this path.”
Pillon pointed out that their badges are also a symbol of commitment to their colleagues in the bunker gear, “that you will stand united through every challenge.”
Family support is also crucial for Firefighters.
“The late nights, missed events, and countless moments of worry – these are the shared experiences of loving a Firefighter. Know that your sacrifices will always be recognized and deeply appreciated,” Pillon told the loved ones of the 12 newest Firefighters, as each was called up to receive their badge.
“We are welcoming you to a proud legacy of service, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment. Wear your badges with pride, but also with the understanding of what that represents: the trust placed in you by the community and the responsibility that now rests on your shoulders.”
As the new Firefighters begin their journey, Pillon urged them to “remember to serve with honour, bravery, and compassion. Your dedication and commitment already shine through and it has been a true pleasure having you with us thus far.”
Mayor Sherry Bondy has a lot to be proud of, but what Firefighters dedicate to their role is at the top of her list.
“Our Fire Department is the backbone of our community’s safety. Firefighters always respond when we need them the most. This dedicated team of men and women show their commitment to protecting the safety of our families, our homes, and our businesses,” she said.
Completing the training not only demonstrates the recruits’ newly obtained skills, but their determination and selflessness, Bondy said.
“Their dedication is a true testament of the spirit of public service. We are proud to have them join the Essex Fire & Rescue team.”
The new Firefighters are Jordan Fox, Paige Jimmerfield, Trevor Brockman, Trevor Denny, Cassandra Dame, Wyatt Hanson, Shawn Spina, Kerry Miller, Jeff Barker, Kyle McLean, Tim Branch, and Shane Dumouchelle.
