Essex launches Noon Year’s Eve tradition for young families

by Sylene Argent, Local Journalism Initiative

Local families had the chance to ring in the New Year in a new way on December 31. The Town of Essex hosted its first new annual tradition, the Noon Year’s Eve Party, at the Maedel Community Centre.

Local families were welcome to register to participate in the event that offered a photobooth and prop making, carnival games, face painting, and colouring.

At noon, all the youths gathered in the gym – with a glass of sparkling juice and noisemakers in hand – to enjoy the main spectacle, the noon balloon drop. The balloons were equipped with flashing lights, which created quite the spectacle when the lights were turned off to enhance the experience.

“We wanted to start something new, something young kids could participate in,” Zak Kolasa, Acting Assistant Manager of Programs, said.

He noted the turnout was great, and staff ended-up accommodating more than planned. In total, 110 people enjoyed the experience and were able to kick-off 2025 with an exciting step forward.

Other New Year’s programs offered through the Town of Essex included a free skate at the Essex Centre Sports Complex and at the Harrow Arena on New Year’s Eve. All recreational swims at the Essex Recreation Centre were free from December 22 to January 3, including on New Year’s Day.

Kolasa urged everyone to keep an eye out for Town of Essex Family Day activities as details are announced.
