Essex Appreciation Night recognizes volunteers, Good Samaritans, Mayor’s Award recipients

by Sylene Argent, Local Journalism Initiative

In recognition of the effort, time, and dedication volunteers bring to the many Town of Essex committees and boards, the annual Volunteer Appreciation Night was hosted at the Essex Center Sports Complex on Friday, November 21.

The event was also a way to recognize five individuals with the third annual Good Samaritan Award, nominated by the community, and by Sherry Bondy to present her second annual Mayor’s Recognition Awards.

As event emcee, Deputy Mayor Rob Shepley took a moment, on behalf of the Town, to acknowledge all the volunteers on the many Town of Essex boards and committees, and all they have accomplished this year.

“It is an honour to be here tonight to celebrate you, our dedicated committee members and volunteers,” Mayor Bondy said. “You have played a major role in shaping our community, making it better, safer, and a more vibrant place to live, work, and grow.”

She added the Town is “truly grateful for the enthusiasm and dedication you bring to your roles as volunteers, and we appreciate taking time from your busy lives to support your fellow community members. Your hard work does not go unnoticed.”

Those committees and boards include the newest addition, the Affordable Housing Task Force. Members of this newly formed committee will work to provide advice, suggestions, and recommendations to Administration and Council on issues related to affordable housing in the municipality.

Members of the Essex Accessibility Advisory Committee, the Arts, Culture, and Tourism (ACT) Committee, Essex Center BIA, Co-An Park Advisory Committee, Committee of Adjustment,

Essex Festival Committee, Appeals Committee, Essex County Opp Detachment Board-North, Essex Municipal Heritage Committee, ELK Advisory Committee, Drainage Board Committee, Property Standards Committee, and Santa's Village Committee, were recognized for their dedication that enhances the Town’s services or entertainment.

The 2024 Good Samaritan Awards were presented to Krista Sweet who shows pride for the community through her ongoing support for small businesses, and for her volunteer hours, such as in organizing events like the Essex Centre StreetFest.

Ralph Livesey was awarded for stopping at the scene of an accident to offer assistance. His own car ended up getting stolen. Bondy said his actions that day are a testament to his character.

Ron Fick has been a snow angel in Viscount Estates for years, clearing for those who need help doing so. He also helps others with various tasks.

Shelley Willan cuts lawns, shovels driveways, helps injured wildlife, moves furniture, and lends a hand to neighbours in need.

Andrew Taylor goes above and beyond to help animals in need, especially cats. He offers his time to trap free-roaming cats to get them care. He has also covered the cost of getting some of the cats fixed.

The Mayor’s Recognition Youth Award was presented to Rachel Wilbee and Lauryn Smith, who organized the first annual Essex Fun Fest 5KM Walk, Run, and Wheel, which raised over $7000 for the Essex Area Food Bank. They also both serve on the EDHS Student Council.

The Mayor’s Recognition Business Excellence Award went to Tim and Jannise Stanley of M&M Concessions for employing youth, providing opportunity for service hours, and organizing sports tournaments. It has also supported underprivileged children in sports and recently gifted bursaries to graduating students.

A Mayor’s Recognition Business Excellence Award also went to RFP Plumbing & Electrical for raising $13,000 this year through its annual Barn Bash for the Essex Area Food Bank and the Canadian Mental Health Association of Windsor.

The Mayor’s Recognition Arts and Culture Award went to Heritage Colchester for supporting the arts while raising funds to restore the Colchester Schoolhouse.

The Mayor’s Recognition Natural Environment Award went to Cooper’s Hawk Vineyards for its work to restore five acres of land to its natural habitat.

The Mayor’s Recognition Special Award went to Raymond Renaud, who is a true ambassador for the town, Bondy said. He is always going above and beyond to promote Essex and support local businesses. He also actively volunteers, spreads joy, and teaches others the importance of kindness.

“Your stories are inspiring and we truly value your commitment to our community,” Bondy said of the Mayor’s Recognition Awards recipients.
